Brush hogging and bush hogging in Brevard County

Call it brush hogging or bush hogging, it is the same machine and the same result: a tractor with a rotary cutter knocking overgrowth down to the ground across acreage, fence lines and lots a mower cannot touch.

Office hours Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Emergency and storm calls are prioritized ahead of routine work.

Six places the tractor goes

Where a mower stops and the brush hog starts

Anything taller than the deck of a lawn mower and thicker than a wrist is brush hog work. Palmetto, dog fennel, saplings and vines included.

  • Tractor clearing brush on an overgrown lot
    01

    Overgrown acreage

Fields and lots that have not been cut in a season or three. The rotary cutter takes brush and saplings up to a few inches thick and leaves a stubble you can mow next time.

  • Treeline growing out over a pasture fence line
    02

    Fence lines and easements

The strip along a fence, a drainage easement or a power easement, mowed clean so the line is visible and the fence can be worked on.

  • An open, clear strip of lawn between two Florida houses with nothing growing in it
    03

    Vacant lot maintenance

Counties and cities write up lots that go to weeds. A regular cut keeps the notice off the door and the neighbors quiet.

  • Mown grass bank running down to a retention pond
    04

    Pasture reclaim

Pasture that has gone to brush comes back with a hard cut or two. Stumps and roots stay; that is a land clearing job if you want them gone.

  • Overgrown planting bed before cleanup
    05

    Palmetto and dog fennel

Saw palmetto and dog fennel are the two things that grow back fastest in Brevard. The cutter knocks both flat; a second cut a few months later slows them down.

  • Several trees marked with tape ahead of clearing work
    06

Before a build or a survey

Surveyors, builders and buyers need to see the ground. One pass with the tractor and the corners, the grade and the wet spots are visible again.

How it goes

One tractor, one pass, repeat as needed

  1. Walk it or send photos

We need to know what is growing, how thick, and whether there is anything hidden in it: old fence wire, stumps, a well head, a burrow.

  2. Flag the hazards

Stumps, wire and wet ground get marked. Gopher tortoise burrows stop the cutter inside 25 feet until the FWC permit is in hand; that permit is yours.

  3. Cut high, then low

Heavy growth gets a first pass high to knock it down, then a second pass at the finish height.

  4. Leave it mowable

The stubble is short enough that a regular mower can hold it from here. If you want the stumps and roots out, that is land clearing.

When we get there

What to expect

  • Chopped, not hauled

The cutter leaves the material chopped on the ground. It breaks down fast in Florida heat. Hauling is available if you want it gone.

  • Stumps stay

A brush hog mows; it does not pull roots. Anything you want removed to the ground is a land clearing job.

  • A repeat schedule if you want one

Lots and easements on a quarterly or twice-yearly cut stay ahead of the county and the palmetto.

The equipment

The tractor, and what backs it up

  • TR Lawn and Tree tractor

    Tractor with rotary cutter

    On the job
Mows brush, palmetto and overgrowth to the ground across acreage, fence lines and easements.
    Why it matters
The tractor covers ground a mower never will and leaves a lot that can be mowed again next season.
  • TR Lawn and Tree giant mini loader

    Giant mini loader

    On the job
Carries wood and brush out through a side gate or across a lawn on tracks.
    Why it matters
It fits where a truck cannot and spreads its weight, which is what keeps turf and pavers whole.
  • TR Lawn and Tree grapple truck

    Grapple truck

    On the job
Loads brush, root balls and trunk sections without anyone lifting by hand.
    Why it matters
Hauling is part of the job, not an extra. A cleared lot is only cleared once the pile is gone.

Questions

Brush hogging questions

Something not here? Call 321-504-1054 during office hours or book a free estimate.

What does brush hogging mean?

Mowing heavy growth with a rotary cutter pulled behind a tractor. It takes brush, weeds, vines and saplings that a lawn mower cannot, and leaves them chopped on the ground. Roots and stumps stay.

Brush hog or bush hog, what is the difference?

None. Bush Hog is a brand of rotary cutter, and the name stuck the way Kleenex did. People in Brevard say both, and they mean the same job.

How much do people charge for brush hogging?

By the hour or by the acre, depending on how thick the growth is and how far the tractor has to travel. Thin overgrowth on flat ground is quick; palmetto and saplings are slow. We look at it, then give you a number.

How tall can the brush be?

Head-high brush and saplings up to a few inches thick are fine. Anything thicker is a tree, and trees are cut, not mowed.

Will it kill the palmetto?

It knocks it down. Saw palmetto regrows from the root, so a lot that has gone to palmetto needs a repeat cut or a mulching pass to keep it down.

Do you haul the cuttings?

By default they stay chopped on the ground and break down within weeks. If you want the lot clean, we rake and haul, or the mulcher can process it on site.

What if there are gopher tortoise burrows?

We stop inside 25 feet of a burrow until you have the FWC permit. The permit is the owner's; we flag the burrows so you know where they are.

Can you mow a lot the county wrote me up for?

Yes. That is one of the most common calls. Send the notice and a photo of the lot and we will schedule it.

Next step

How many acres, and how long since it was cut?

Those two answers get you an estimate. Photos from the road help.
